One died in infancy. The others were Peter, Elizabeth, and Sophia. Sophia was born in 1826, one year before the State of New York was due to end slavery. Dumont had promised Isabella that if she worked hard, he would free her that year. Although Isabella worked as hard as she possibly could, he did not keep his promise. After she injured her hand, Dumont said she had failed to be productive. Isabella was furious and was determined to take her own freedom. As an expression of good faith, she spun 100 pounds of wool into yarn, and then one night just before dawn, she picked up her infant daughter and took refuge with a couple on a nearby farm.
Four years later, he accepted the position of president of Avery College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and served there until 1870, then returned to Shiloh Church in New York City. S. Minister to Liberia and finally received that appointment in 1881. He arrived in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, in December and died less than two months later, on February 12, 1882.
They were later found innocent of the charges. Isabella then accompanied Matthias to New York City, where he had influential friends. She kept house for one of them, a wealthy merchant. She joined the John Street Methodist Church for a time, but she was not comfortable being segregated with the other black parishioners from the white congregants. She withdrew and joined Zion’s Church, an allblack congregation on Church Street. In New York, Isabella was reunited with two of her sisters and a brother.
