Eventually (it is not clear how) Hans made it home to The Hague after the European armistice of May 8, 1945. The Netherlands had been liberated prior to this on May 5. The last part of his captivity probably was the worst in terms of physical deprivation. His letters from Stanislau and Neubrandenburg reveal a surprising amount of abundance for wartime. Before leaving Stanislau he sent a suitcase filled with tobacco, chocolate, and other foodstuffs to his family in the Netherlands. He felt they needed it more than he did!

A naval institute was also organized at Surabaya in the Dutch East Indies, but it was forced to close in 1942 at the time of the Japanese invasion. One wonders whether Hans Rookmaaker had a chance to choose to escape in 1940 as some of his fellow midshipmen did. By that time there were compelling factors in his life to keep him close to home and prevent him from running away, even if he’d had the opportunity or felt convinced he could have helped the war effort by being outside the country. Although his sister Door 42 ART AND THE CHRISTIAN MIND by this time had married and was living with her husband in the Dutch Indies, in The Hague he still had a single sister and parents with health problems who concerned him and needed him.

At this point, time was a lot more precious than any of them probably realized. After Hans’s release from Scheveningen Prison there were to be only five months before commissioned officers like him were commanded by the Nazis to report in Breda, a city historically associated with the Royal Netherlands Military Academy. That call came in April 1942. From this center, Rookmaaker was dispatched with a group that became Oflag 67 (Offizierslager für kriegsgefangene Offiziere = “POW camp for officers 67”).
