For Holiday, the incident was another piece of bad luck. SOME GOOD NEWS Holiday may not have been making progress as a live performer, but her recording career blossomed. By the late 1930s, she recorded regularly for Columbia, usually under the direction of Teddy Wilson, with a small studio band made up of the best jazz musicians of the day. In general, the recordings were intended for a black audience and consisted of silly and second-rate love songs that white singers had declined to record. But with Wilson’s thoughtful arrangements, Holiday turned these otherwise forgettable songs into jazz classics.

She retired from making films in 1935 and pursued other interests, among them, flying planes, painting, and writing. BILLIE 17 According to Mae Barnes, however, Eleanora did not change her name because of Billie Dove, but rather because of a friend named Billie. She had no reason to take Fagan as her surname given her relatives’ dislike of her and her mother. Though reluctant to take advantage of her father’s growing fame as a jazz musician, Billie took “Holiday” as her last name. ” THE “UP” GIRL Billie and other young, female singers on the after-hours club circuit had a regular routine.
